We are officially one week away from seeing the birds take the field for live action and the familiar feeling of living Sunday to Sunday will slowly start to sink in.
We're at about 7 months from seeing Atlanta fall yards short in Philly. A rested Nick Foles made just enough plays to best the Falcons who came rolling into town after a hard-fought win in L.A.
The theme of 2018 could almost be pegged as Quinn looking on in disbelief as another ball failed to bounce Atlanta's way ( and usually right into the arms of a "right-place, right-time" defender. )
It looked like Atlanta seemed destined for another special season as they raced out of the gate 3-0. But as we look back at the year, it looks like Atlanta had used every drop of fortune in their bucket by Week 3.
The goal-line stand against Chicago and Golden Tate falling just short in Detroit helped Atlanta to 3-0, but the birds luck ran out with a fluky TD call and equally questionable interception call against Buffalo.
We were off to the races.
Tipped pass after fluke play all season long. I can't decide if the pinnacle was Julio falling on the most critical play of the season, or a pigskin defying the laws of physics and come to rest on the back side of Saints defender for an interception.
Despite all the troubles, Atlanta churned their way to a playoff win and nearly earned a repeat trip to championship Sunday.
Here's to just a sprinkle of better fortune, which may be all the birds need to get back to the big stage.
PRE-SEASON WEEK 1
Atlanta(0-0) @ New York Jets(0-0)
August 10th - 7:30 PM
Last Week: N/A
Last Meeting : Atlanta defeated the Jets 25-20 in Week 9 last season.
Series All Time - Atlanta has won 7 of 12 overall meetings.
It's likely we'll see these teams manage the outing in very different manners.
Quinn has typically adopted the "Series, Quarter, Half, Sit" model with Ryan and his co-stars and I wouldn't be surprised if we see even less of them this season. The better use for these games for Atlanta is to evaluate the final 10 or so spots on the roster as they don't have a lot of questions needing answers.
That's not to say there isn't anything fun to look for. We should get our first look at the entire draft class, including first-round pick Calvin Ridley.
Flip the script for Todd Bowles and the Jets' shiny new QB Sam Darnold. The Jets will likely use this game to get Darnold a smattering of live, NFL speed reps and he will likely see a fair amount of snaps.
I would not expect to see an extended amount of New York's defense as they look relatively strong this season. While the offense will likely see extended action, defense #1 will likely see limited time.
Either way, it will be good to finally see Atlanta back in uniform.
